Title : The Lumberjacks Material Type: printed text Authors: Donald MacKay, Author Publisher: McGraw-Hill Ryerson Publication Date: 1978 ISBN (or other code): LABMAC1978 Languages : English (eng) Descriptors: Labour, Unionism, Working-Class Keywords: Labour, Canada, Logging Abstract: This is the story of the men who cut and hauled timber from the birth of the industry until the internal combustion engine changed lumbering techniques in the 1950s. There were the pioneer bushrangers who cruised the wintry woods for virgin pine and fir as tall as steeples, the axemen and the sawyers whose cry of "Timber-r-r" echoed down the hills, the '"river hogs" who broke the deadly log jams, the teamsters who hauled loads like juggernauts down mountain slopes, and the brawling raftsmen who guided enormous rafts of logs – floating villages – down the perilous rapids of the Ottawa and the St. Lawrence. From the development of a small black presence in the sixteenth century, through the colonial labour institutions of slavery, indentureship, and trade unionism, Ramdin expertly guides us through the stages of creation for a UK minority whose origins are often overlooked. He examines the emergence of a black radical ideology underpinning twentieth-century struggles against unemployment, racial attacks and workplace inequality, and delves into the murky realms of employer and trade union racism. First published in 1987, this revised edition includes a new introduction reflecting on events over the past four decades. Title : Toronto Workers Respond to Industrial Capitalism 1867–1892 Material Type: printed text Authors: Gregory S. Kealey, Author Publisher: University of Toronto Press ISBN (or other code): LabKea1980 Languages : English (eng) Descriptors: Labour, Unionism, Working-Class Keywords: Labour, Industrial Revolution, Working-Class, Unionism, Toronto, 19th century, Canada, Knights of Labour, Knights of Labor Abstract: "Toronto's Industrial Revolution of the 1850s and 1860s transformed the city's economy and created a distinct working class. This book examines the worker's role in the transition to industrial capitalism and traces the emergence of a strong trade union movement in the latter half of the nineteenth century.
Immigrant workers were already organized along ethnic lines and voluntary societies like the Orange Order played an informal but active part in the broad pattern of social change. Artisan groups were more directly instrumental in developing strategies to cope with the new pressures of industrial capitalism. In the period covered by this book Toronto's moulders and printers maintained and even strengthened the traditions of workers' control in the shop. The shoemakers and coopers were less successful, but the lessons of their defeats made them important early members of the Knights of Labor in the 1880s.”Toronto Workers Respond to Industrial Capitalism 1867–1892 [printed text] / Gregory S.
