Social MovementsAbstract: Paralyzed from polio at eighteen months, Judith Heumann began her struggle for equality early in life. From fighting to attend grade school after being described as a "fire hazard" to later winning a lawsuit against the New York City school system for denying her a teacher's license because of her paralysis, Judy has set precedents that fundamentally improved rights for disabled people.
A young woman, Judy rolled her wheelchair through the doors of the US Department of Health, Education, and Welfare in San Fransisco as a leader of the Section 504 sit-in, the longest takeover of a government building in US history. Working with a community of over 150 disabled activists and allies, Judy helped to successfully pressure the Carter administration to implement protections for disabled people's rights, sparking a national movement and leading to the creation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Candid, intimate, and irreverent, Being Heumann is a story of one woman's lifelong battle - from streets of Brooklyn and San Francisco to inside the halls of Washington - to make real a world in which we all belong.Being Heumann: An Unrepentant Memoir of a Disability Rights Activist [printed text] / Judith Heumann, Author ; Kristen Joiner, Author . - [S.l.] : Beacon Press, [s.d.].

Labour, Poverty and ClassAbstract: This is a new book from the author of "Upstairs in the Crazy House", the critically acclaimed memoir of her own experiences as a mental health patient. Now, a decade on, she returns to the subject of mental illness, introducing us to psychiatric survivors, who, like herself, have managed to reconstruct their lives against all odds. As the survivors' stories unfold, Capponi offers her own informed and deeply humane critique of the Canadian mental health system, creating a portrait of mental illness, the people who live with it, and a treatment system in desperate need of reform.
